Drinking Driver Program (DDP) FAQs

1) What does it cost to attend the PRIME For Life (PFL) Instructor Training?

The three-day training, curriculum materials and participant manual are provided at no cost to the participant or DDP. The Prevention Research Institute (PRI) will provide refreshment breaks. Training participants are responsible for meals, lodging and travel expenses.

2) Who must attend the PRIME For Life Instructor Training?

DDP Instructors and DDP Directors who have instructor responsibilities are required to complete the three-day PFL Instructor Training. The person responsible for supervising and monitoring the instruction that instructors provide is also responsible for attending the training and becoming certified; depending on the program, this may be the Director or a lead/supervising instructor.

DDP Directors who do not have instructor or supervisory responsibilities are also required to attend the training to learn about the program in order to provide oversight and to support implementation of the curriculum with fidelity.

3) My instructors are part-time and work full-time at other jobs. They are not able to attend three days of training.

PRIME For Life is a unique program and different from many prevention and intervention approaches. To ensure an understanding of the curriculum and the prevention and intervention protocols, full participation in an intensive training is required for effective implementation. To insure fidelity to this evidence-based standardized protocol, program materials may not be used by any person who does not attend the three-day training.

4) If I attend the PRIME For Life Instructor Training, can I then go back and train the instructors in my DDP?

In order to facilitate effective implementation and fidelity to the curriculum, all persons who teach PRIME must be certified by PRI. All instructors must attend the PFL Instructor Training. To ensure an understanding of the curriculum, and the prevention and intervention protocols, full participation in an intensive training is required to teach the program. Program materials may not be used by any person who does not attend the three-day training.

5) If the training dates are not convenient for me or my instructors, can we attend training in another region?

Yes. You may attend training at a time and location that is convenient for you not only in NYS but anywhere in the country that a PFL Instructor Training is offered.

6) When do we have to begin using PRIME For Life?

All DDPs must implement the approved DMV PRIME For Life curriculum in all classes commencing on or after July 1, 2011.

7) Will CASAC/CPP/CPS clock hours be available?

Yes. PRIME For Life Instructor Training is eligible for 24 CASAC initial and renewal hours in Section II and CPP/CPS initial and renewal hours in Section I.
