The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and the Office of Mental Health in collaboration with the Center for Practice Innovations at Columbia Psychiatry of the New York State Psychiatric Institute is pleased to announce a new curriculum based practice to provide adults with substance use and mental health concerns the knowledge and life strategies that support recovery.
This new program, Wellness Self-Management Plus (WSM+) is an adaptation of the Wellness Self-Management (WSM) program. WSM, based in part on Illness Management and Recovery, a nationally recognized evidence-based practice, was designed by NYS OMH as a curriculum-oriented program for adults with serious mental health problems. WSM+ has been designed to address both substance use and mental health in an integrated and recovery supportive manner.
The development and support for the WSM+ program was made possible by the active leadership of Arlene González-Sánchez, M.S., L.M.S.W, Commissioner of the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and Michael Hogan, Ph.D., Commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Health.
This new curriculum provides 57 lessons, each structured and designed to impart useful information, to assist participants with their recovery. Each lesson includes important information about the topic, a personalized worksheet and an action step to allow participants to personalize the information.
Core competencies are embedded in each lesson which include:
- motivation enhancing approaches,
- educational techniques and
- basic cognitive behavioral strategies.
To learn more about running a WSM+ group, we would encourage you to view the training developed for the original WSM program. Although this was created for programs serving adults with serious mental health problems, the core competencies for running these groups are the same. FREE training is available on-line to NYS OASAS programs through the Center for Practice Innovations (CPI) Learning Community.

On-line training and workbooks are available exclusively to OASAS and OMH programs.
You can download electronic versions at no charge. Bound paper copies can be ordered at a cost per workbook that ranges from $9.00 to $25.00, depending upon the size of your order.
